They began dancing in the streets in Harlem just before midnight. A middle-aged lady in a flowing turquoise dress hopped out of her Nissan at the intersection of Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard and 125th Street, and gyrated across the upper Manhattan tarmac.

Jubilation should be the order of the day at the United Nations when an American who is also a son of Kenya and a child of Indonesia is elected president of the most powerful country in a world in need of healing.

Four years ago we gathered at The Nation to watch the election returns. Around midnight we began to weep. But we had to put out an issue the next day.

The nation's capital came alive after 11 p.m. on election eve, as thousands poured into the streets to celebrate a victory that everyone was calling historic. Car horns blaring, whooping and shouting, high fives all around, multi-racial crowds celebrating joyously.

And so it came to pass that on Nov. 4, 2008, shortly after 10 p.m. Eastern time, the American Civil War ended, as a black man - Barack Hussein Obama - won enough electoral votes to become president of the United States.

'Mükemmel Bir Gün'ün ilk yarım saatinde gene klasik Ferzan Özpetek fırfırlarında boğulmak üzereydim. Bıcır bıcır çocuklar, becerikli anne, güzel oğlanlar, güzel kızlar. Her şeyi olan fakat 'insan olamayan' politikacı... Anneanne rolündeki Stefania Sandrelli olmasa çıkacaktım.
