Six people were reported to have drowned and at least 14 others were missing Tuesday evening in Poland's north-east Mazurian Lakes district after hurricane-force winds capsized dozens of boats in the popular tourist area. The violent storm, likened by some to a tornado, appeared without warning, witnesses were quoted as saying.

Rescue crews were also searching lakes where empty boats were blown to the shore.

Trees toppled by high winds also blocked roads and rescue efforts in the area, Polish media reported.

Weather forecasts predicted heavy storms could move south Tuesday evening to more densely-populated regions closer to the capital Warsaw.
